On many occasions, it is found that a particular song from a new album was available on various sites for free. This is a good marketing strategy as the prospective audience can decide through the sample whether they want to purchase the full CD or not. Another argument in favor of free music download is that it is a form of an art and a piece of art belongs to all and can not be owned by one individual.

Royalty is a curious concept. This means that a percentage of the sale is provided to the copyright holder of the work of art, process or invention. The piece of art could be a book or a musical symphony or a painting. Any expression of human feelings in the form of art can be copyrighted and hence a royalty on the copyright becomes due as soon as the sale proceeds are obtained by anyone on the copyrighted work. The artist or his nominees, after his death, keep receiving royalty so long as the work of art is fetching sale proceeds due to its market value. As anyone would realize the more classical an item is, the more perpetual sale revenue it will bring in.
