Role Of RIAA In Music Downloads

The task taken up by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has a lot to do the music industry spread across the US. The foremost aims of this association are managing good quality music and save from harm the copy right restricted music. In order to meet this goal RIAA takes legal action against people the rules set down by RIAA for this purpose. Illegitimate download of music has been a major issue taken up by RIAA. Free download of any copyright protected music is strictly prohibited. For fear of legal actions threatened by RIAA many online music websites had to close down. This shows that RIAA plays a decisive part in the matters of any music download. A short description of function of RIAA is given under.

RIAA categorically says that any kind of piracy will not be tolerated. It had been reported that many people were making use of copyright protected music for business. People have a tendency of unlawfully making multiple copies of music, after having them downloaded from the net. Afterwards the music is sold after burning into multiple CDs. As a result music industry suffers losses in terms of revenue says RIAA. One and all are prohibited from downloading any music without due permission, and stern actions would be taken against guilty.

RIAA stringently opposes P2P music sharing. In the year 2000 it initiated steps to see that P2P trading of music is constrained. Though the trading could be called to have reduced quite effectively but it continues to exist even today. RIAA has not reduced its pressure against P2P sharing. It has imposed prohibition not only against the traders but even individuals are not immune from it.

RIAA is doing all it can to help prevention of misuse of music which is under copyright protection. However the activities of RIAA are not positively viewed by everybody. There are critics who point out that when online services such as Napster existed the sale of CDS was far more. Concerns have also been voiced about the goal of RIAA to help the artists and recording studios. There is also the matter of artists being not being correctly compensated and made to suffer loss while they make huge profit margins.

RIAA has no objections against copying a CD for personal purpose. One is allowed to burn a copy of one?s legally purchased CD. The disapproval is for burning copies illegally for sale. RIAA will institute legal proceedings against people selling illegal copies.

RIAA formulated a law in the year 2003 that no action will be taken against people who had in the past downloaded music illegally provided they undertake to not to do so in future. This was hailed by many as a positive approach but the law was deflated in a year?s time.

In general people have undecided feelings for RIAA. There are many who are unhappy about it, yet there are others who support its earnest efforts. Though there is a lack of uniform opinion about RIAA, it can be said with certainty that it has made impressive progress in the recent past.

Though RIAA defends itself vigorously many people are not in agreement to their tactics. Many have expressed their apprehension that music would die if RIAA insists on having its way.
