What Are The Best MP3 Wireless FM Modulators?
A MP3 Wireless FM Transmitter had different meanings to different people so before we can start we need to first understand what a FM Modulator means vs. a FM Transmitter.
A FM Modulator is designed to take an audio source, which in this case is your MP3 Player, and transmit it to a FM Radio (i.e. FM receiver). And if you are using it in a car, which is one of the most common places to use a FM Modulator, it will probably be hardwired into the car (i.e. you can't remove it and take it some other place very easily).
The other typical features for a FM Modulator is it will broadcast on only one frequency and only go a few inches or a foot or two at most. This requires that the frequency be very uncommon so you don't have to compete with commercial stations. This is one of the reasons why car radios allow you to tune into stations outside the standard Public FM Band of 88.0 to 108.0 FM (FYI, here in the U.S. we use the odd frequency settings like 107.1 FM but in Europe and other places they use the even frequencies like 107.0 FM). Usually a car radio will let you tune to 87.5, 87.7 or 87.9 FM so you can use a FM Modulator and not have to deal with big radio stations.
Another option is to use a frequency between 88.0 and 108.0. This is the public FM Band where commercial radios stations play so you may run into transmission problems.
The second issue with a FM Modulator that only broadcasts a few inches or a foot or two at best is it requires the FM Modulator to be very close (i.e. "in-line") to the FM Radio's antenna. This means you typically have to pull out your car's FM Radio and install the FM Modulator so it can be close to the FM Radio as well as not be seen. This can pose a problem if you are not handy with electronics or don't want to pay an audio company to install it for you.
Lastly, you will also need to be skilled with electrical or you will be forced to hire someone because a FM Modulator requires a hardwired connection to the car's power source. And if done incorrectly you can really mess up your car's electrical system.
Plus you could also screw up your car's audio system as well if the 2 above are not bad enough...
Now on to FM Transmitters. These work similar to a FM Modulator but they have more flexibility (PS. we are talking about the small personal FM Transmitters here, not the ones used by radio companies)
You can gain some nice benefits from using a FM Transmitter instead of a FM Modulator, assuming you pick a good FM Transmitter. those benefits are:
* No Installation Required - FM Transmitters are designed to be mobile so you won't need to mess around with installation like a FM Modulator.
* No Frequency Limitations - Most Good FM Transmitters will let you cover the entire public band so you don't have to worry about fighting with a commercial station.
* Broadcast Further - No worries about only going a few inches with FM Transmitter like you would with a FM Modulator (Of course that's if you pick a good FM Transmitter)
* More Mobility - No hard wiring means you're not forced to only using the FM Transmitter in your car. This is assuming you purchase a FM Transmitter that has more power options than just a 12V adapter.
* More Flexibility - A FM Transmitter will let you also use more than just one audio source since it is designed to be flexible.
As you can see a FM Transmitter is heads-and-shoulders over a FM Modulator. Of course you need to make sure you buy a good FM Transmitter that actually works.
So you may be asking "If a FM Transmitter is what I really want or meant to say how do I find the right one?" Keep reading and I can help you.
--- Finding The Right One For You --- To quickly find the right FM Transmitter (i.e. MP3 Wireless FM Modulator) you will have to sit down and think over a few questions first:
1. Do I want to be able to broadcast more than just my MP3 Player? - If all you want to use is your MP3 Player then you are all set but it other audio devices like your satellite radio, computer, or even your TV come to mind you need to be aware of what you go with.
2. What power options will I want or need? - No matter how you want to power it even if its only by batteries or only a 12V adapter you need to make sure the FM Transmitter you go with offers that feature
3. How far do I want to transmit? - Does only going 5 to 10 feet work or me or would it be better if I could transmit a 100 feet or more.
4. Where do I plan on using it? - Since most FM Transmitters allow you to be mobile you can use it in more places than your car but you want to double check that is the case before you buy
5. What If Technology Changes On Me? - Technology changes quickly so you want to make sure you use a FM Transmitter that will work on more than just certain iPods because it can get expensive fast
Once these questions are answered you can be sure that MP3 Wireless FM Modulator (i.e. FM Transmitter) you buy will be a good fit for you.
